Rila Mountains

The Rila Mountains
The name "Rila" has Slavonic origin and it means "the mountains full of water". No wonder it was named like that when you learn that main Bulgarian Rivers like Maritsa, Iskar and Mesta starts from here. Rila is the highest of the Bulgarian Mountains as it rises up to almost 3000 m atop Mt Musala. The high part of the mountains is formed by a glacier which is the reason why there are many jugged peaks and glacial lakes to be found there. This is also the reason why you may find it difficult to take your bike up there. We would rather suggest visiting the regions of Belmeken, Grantchar, Semkovo, Zekiritsa and the foothills of the mountains where you will be able to enjoy the scenery while riding on network of forest roads and single tracks.
